Northern Ireland Motorists to get ‘Black Box’

The Minister in charge of the Department of the Environment, Alex Attwood, has met with representatives from the car insurance industry to discuss the high premiums paid by Northern Irish drivers.  Northern Irish insurance premiums are on average 11% higher than those paid in the rest of the UK, although the difference can be as much as 70% in rural areas.

One of the proposals to bring the costs down is the installation of airplane style black boxes in the cars of new drivers.  Almost one in five new drivers has an accident in their first year.  The box can monitor speed, use of brakes and poor steering and it is proposed would be linked to a “pay as you drive” insurance policy rewarding careful driving with reduced premiums.

Driving without insurance is a criminal offence in Northern Ireland and drivers who commit this motoring offence face a minimum of 6 penalty points and up to a £5,000 fine, 6 months in prison and/or disqualification.
