Cosmetic surgery firm refuses to replace PIP implants

The cosmetic surgery firm which is believed to have fitted more PIP breast implants than any other UK firm, the Harley Medical Group, has said that it will not be replacing the implants free of charge.

The government recently said private clinics had a "moral duty" to pay for the replacement of the PIP implants, but chairman of the Harley Medical Group, Mel Braham, says they do not have the resources to carry out replacement operations for free. He also said the "moral responsibility" lay with the government to pay for any operations to remove the PIP implants as it was its regulatory authority, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (HMRA) that approved the implants.

Approximately 40,000 women in the UK are thought to have had the PIP breast implants fitted, but it has been confirmed that they were not used in any NHS or private operations in Northern Ireland. The implants have been banned in France, were they were made, and come under attack for containing industrial grade silicone, normally used in furniture and computers, instead of medical grade silicone.

If you live in Northern Ireland and have suffered injury or loss as a result of defective product or medical negligence, you should contact a solicitor to discuss a potential compensation claim for medical negligence.
