Report predicts employment market to worsen

The quarterly survey produced by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) predicts that the job market in Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK will get worse, as employers hold off on recruitment.

The report is compiled from the responses of 1,000 employers surveyed on their plans to take on new employees, and the most recent survey suggests that employers are holding off on taking on new staff to see how the economy fares over the next months. The report only adds to a bleak forecast for overall employment levels over the next months as public sector jobs continue to be cut. The Treasury maintains that the jobs lost in the public sector will be overtaken by new job creation in the private sector by 2015, but even if that should prove to be true, four years is a long time to wait to see some balance in the job market again.

The government approach to employment came into criticism by Barnardo's, who released a report saying that young teenagers were being marginalised by government programs that prioritised the unemployed aged 18 and above.
