£800k of debt recovered for our clients in 2011
The Wilson Nesbitt debt recovery team successfully secured the payment of nearly £800,000 of debts owed to clients in 2011. Those debts involved both large sums owed to bigger client firms, but also a great deal of small to medium sized debts owed by the customers of small businesses throughout Northern Ireland.
As the Northern Ireland economy continues to falter an increasing number of businesses are seeking to recover debts owed to them by customers that have not responded to their own efforts to chase payment. Wilson Nesbitt saw a 30% increase in the total debt it was asked to recover by clients in 2011 compared to the previous year.
Gilbert Nesbitt, Senior Partner at Wilson Nesbitt solicitors, commented:
"Most businesses in Northern Ireland had a difficult year in 2011, with business activity greatly reduced. That has only increased the importance of securing payment for every bit of work that is completed, and firms have had to seriously review how they go about chasing outstanding invoice payments from their customers.
"Some firms are only now putting into place an organised internal debt chasing procedure, and even then, there are often clients who fail to respond to letters and calls from the company. Getting a solicitor involved can often greatly increase the chance of recovering a debt from a customer, and firms should note that they do not always have to write-off old debts - these can be recovered up to 6 years after the amount is originally payable."
