Business Secretary Cable visits Northern Ireland

In his first visit to Northern Ireland, Business Secretary Vince Cable has done a tour of a number of companies, saying that what he has seen in Belfast refutes the idea that the "UK doesn't make anything anymore."

Mr Cable visited the production floor of Andor Technology, and took a tour of Harland and Wolff after a meeting there. He also had a chance to visit the new CSeries wing factory at Bombardier to see at work the £135m funding provided jointly by the Northern Ireland Executive and Westminster. He also opened the new Northern Ireland Advanced Composites Centre (NIACE) research facility in East Belfast, saying it would "develop and commercialise new technologies" in partnership with universities and businesses throughout Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.

Business activity in Northern Ireland has been largely reported in a negative tone of late, with companies struggling to overcome the difficult economic factors in the province. Commercial property in Belfast, and throughout Northern Ireland, has for the large part experienced a significant drop, and large scale redundancies are expected in both the public and private sectors. However, Mr Cable's visit highlighted some of the success stories in Northern Ireland business.
