Compensation paid to victim of school bully

A thirteen year old boy has been awarded an undisclosed four figure sum of compensation for an incident of bullying which required him to have hospital treatment for arm and shoulder injuries.

Jed Winfindale was hit over the head with a wooden drawing board in his classroom in his school near Rotherham in South Yorkshire, and then suffered injuries to his arm and shoulder when trying to defend himself against the bully. His mother decided to take legal action when she learned that the bully was only going to be suspended from school for 2 days despite having being involved in previous disruptive incidents.

Rotherham Council's education authority admitted liability for the incident and an unconfirmed sum of compensation was ordered to be paid to the victim. The case will no doubt alarm many school authorities. There have to date been very few claims cases involving school bullying, though that may soon change as more parents learn about how the mother of the victim's decision to go to court resulted the school to expelling the bully after initially only planning a 2 day suspension.
